Dominican Republic celebrates Mother's Day this Sunday

Santo Domingo, May 25, 2025 — Today, throughout the Dominican Republic, Mother's Day is celebrated, one of the most endearing and significant festivities for Dominican families. This commemoration, which takes place every last Sunday of May, is a tradition that dates back to 1926, when it was officially established at the initiative of Trina de Moya, wife of then-President Horacio Vásquez, and the outstanding educator Ercilia Pepín, in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros.

The first celebration took place on May 30, 1926, in Santiago de los Caballeros, driven by a committee created by Trina de Moya and Ercilia Pepín. Both led the establishment of the Pro-Mother's Day Committee, with the aim of paying tribute to the maternal figure and fostering a tradition of gratitude and respect.

During that first commemoration, emblematic symbols were instituted: the red carnation to honor living mothers and the lily or tuberose to remember those who had passed away. The day was marked by public and private acts that promoted recognition and respect for motherhood.

Mother's Day Today

Currently, Mother's Day in the Dominican Republic is a date full of emotions, where the joy of sharing with the present mothers and the nostalgia for those who are no longer with us are combined. Families gather to express their love and gratitude through gifts, flowers, special meals, and activities that highlight the value of mothers in society.

This celebration not only honors mothers as central figures in family life, but also highlights their fundamental role in building the identity and values of the Dominican nation. It is a day to recognize their unconditional love, their dedication, and their influence in shaping future generations.

Happy Mother's Day to all Dominican mothers!
