Government presents Hurricane Contingency Plan

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader presented the 2025 National Hurricane Contingency Plan, ahead of the Hurricane Season, which runs from June 1st to November 30th.

At the event LA Semanal with the press, the president explained that this plan contains 3 phases, comprising the creation of a campaign to raise awareness and guide on predicted phenomena and preventive actions; strategic actions to address situations caused by meteorological events.

This project will be developed with State resources through the provisions of Law 80-24 of the 2025 General State Budget, which establishes the increase of resources for the Fund available to the presidency for calamities.

The entities that are part of this plan are the ministries of Defense, Public Works, Public Health, Education, National Police, Environment, Energy and Mines, Economy, Agriculture, Tourism, and will be coordinated by the Ministry of the Presidency, and activated by the Emergency Operations Center.

The emergency lines available by the Dominican government are 911 and *462.

Likewise, the installation of the new Doppler Radar in Puerto Plata was announced, which is state-of-the-art equipment that will strengthen meteorological surveillance in the country and covers 200 kilometers around the Dominican coasts. Similarly, in the coming days, the first groundbreaking will be carried out for the installation of another radar at Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez.

Hurricane Contingency Plan:

Given the start of this cyclone season, which activates in the North Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean, authorities expect it to be more active than normal with between 13 and 17 tropical storms. Of those, between 6 and 10 could become hurricanes, and between 3 and 5 could be of great intensity (category 3, 4 or 5).
