Santo Domingo. – With her voice choked with pain, Arisleydi Coronado demanded justice for the death of her granddaughter, who was only seven years old, a victim of brutal abuse allegedly at the hands of her own aunt and her partner in the Los Guandules, sector of the National District. “They fought the girl as if she were a pig. She was an innocent seven-year-old girl. They have to pay because I want justice,” expressed the grandmother through tears.

Coronado narrated that the minor had been placed in custody five months ago with her aunt, Yokeiry Coronado de la Cruz, under the promise of providing her with better living conditions. "They said they were going to make her study, that they would give her a better life, and what they gave her was death. My own sister, blood of her blood... the girl couldn't defend herself. I need, for the love of God, that justice be done. If they have a heart, let them think like a mother, because my girl died of thirst," she recounted. The grandmother assured that they could never notice the mistreatment, as the minor always appeared well-dressed and cared for. “When we spoke with her, she would tell us ‘put the girl with me, the girl is in the bathroom.’ I would ask her about the girl and she was always well-wrapped up, well-dressed. I even thought she was happy because the girl always saw her well-changed. We could never see anything because it seemed that she covered up the scars,” Coronado explained.

The Case

According to the preliminary report, the infant presented multiple signs of physical abuse and torture while in the custody of her aunt and the aunt's partner. The detainees, Yokeiry Coronado de la Cruz, 33 years old, and Jeider Montero Medina, 36, will be presented today at the Palace of Justice, where the coercive measure against them will be announced.
