Noboa decrees nighttime curfew in 5 provinces of Ecuador after protests announced

Quito.- Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa, extended this Thursday the state of exception decreed two days ago due to the protests being prepared against the elimination of the diesel subsidy and imposed a night curfew in five of the country's twenty-four provinces. In a new decree, Noboa included the Andean province of Chimborazo within the state of exception that already contemplated the provinces of Carchi, Imbabura, Pichincha, Azuay, Bolívar, Cotopaxi and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas due to "serious internal commotion".

He also imposed a curfew between 10:00 PM (3:00 GMT) and 5:00 AM (10:00 GMT) in the provinces of Carchi, Imbabura, Cotopaxi, Bolívar and Chimborazo, so that those who circulate during the curfew will be arrested. Hours earlier, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) announced the call for an "indefinite national strike" due to the elimination of the diesel subsidy decreed by the president last Friday, which caused the price of this fuel in Ecuador to rise overnight from 1.80 to 2.80 dollars per gallon (3.78 liters).
