Guterres hopes the release of hostages will help end the nightmare in Gaza

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, urged this Monday that the release of the last Israeli hostages held by Hamas serve to truly end the armed violence and the suffering of the Palestinians.

"I urge all parties to seize this momentum and uphold their commitments under the ceasefire to end the nightmare in Gaza," he said in a reaction issued by his office once Hamas had handed over all living hostages and Israel had released the first group of Palestinian prisoners, according to the agreement reached by both parties.

Guterres said he felt "deeply relieved" that the hostages have regained their freedom and will soon be able to reunite with their families, "after the immense suffering they have endured" and said he hopes that the remains of the deceased hostages will also be handed over.

Regarding the contribution of the United Nations, the Secretary-General assured that the organization is supporting everything necessary for the conflict to cease definitively and for the humanitarian relief of the Gazan population.
