Abinader affirms Minerva Mirabal's fight marked the beginning of the path towards democracy in the DR

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader led the commemorative acts for the centenary of the birth of Minerva Mirabal in Ojo de Agua, Hermanas Mirabal, Dominican Republic, where he highlighted her courage against the dictatorship and affirmed that her struggle marked the beginning of the path towards true democracy in the Dominican Republic. During her intervention, the president highlighted the leadership, intelligence, and commitment of Minerva Mirabal in the fight against the regime of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, emphasizing that she never renounced her ideals despite the persecutions and tortures suffered during that stage of Dominican history.

Abinader also announced that the Government will develop throughout the year a program of activities throughout the national territory and in Dominican diplomatic representations abroad to honor the life, legacy and sacrifice of Minerva Mirabal and her impact on present and future generations. The president recalled that Minerva, along with her sisters Patria Mirabal and María Teresa Mirabal, actively participated in the fight against the dictatorship through the June 14th Revolutionary Movement, becoming a symbol of resistance, dignity, and defense of freedom. During the event, Minou Tavárez Mirabal also spoke, thanking the Government for commemorating the centenary of her mother's birth and for supporting initiatives aimed at highlighting her historical and political legacy. Likewise, Mexican Senator Martha Lucía Micher Camarena valued the support of President Abinader and First Lady Raquel Arbaje for the initiatives that promote equality and the fight against violence against women. In the framework of the commemoration, educational authorities announced the holding of national competitions aimed at students, in addition to the inauguration of the exhibition "Hermanas Mirabal: A Century Later", dedicated to highlighting the thought, life and historical significance of Minerva Mirabal.
