Santo Domingo. – President Luis Abinader responded this Monday to the opposition's criticisms regarding the management of public debt, assuring that his administration has been the only one to reduce the country's debt in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
During the weekly press meeting, the president stated that the “friends of the opposition” manipulate the figures when speaking in absolute numbers, without taking into account the proportion of GDP.

"Lies don't get very far. Sometimes they play with the absolute numbers, but the reality is different," he expressed. Likewise, the president assured that "80% of the debt we have taken on has been to pay commitments inherited from previous governments," reiterating his commitment to responsible and transparent economic management. Abinader presented comparisons between previous governments and his own, pointing out that during the administrations of Leonel Fernández (2004-2012) the debt of the non-financial public sector increased from 28.4% to 30.5% of GDP, while under the mandate of Danilo Medina (2012-2020) it grew from 30.5% to 40.7%. "In our case, the debt fell from 49.7% to 46.9%. We were the only government that has decreased the debt in percentage terms," emphasized the head of state, highlighting that the data comes from the same official sources used by the opposition. Abinader concluded by inviting the opposition to debate the figures based on verifiable data. "There are the numbers, and let them dare to discuss them," he affirmed.
