Santo Domingo.- Between May 31st and June 15th of this year, at least four women took the lives of their partners or ex-partners in different locations in Dominican Republic, in violent events marked by the use of bladed weapons.
Two of the cases occurred on the same day, last May 31, and of the four registered, two occurred in San Francisco de Macorís. Preliminary investigations indicate that, although each case has its particularities, they all share as a common element the use of knives or sharp weapons to commit the crimes.
The most recent event occurred on the morning of last Sunday, June 15, when Katherine Sánchez Mejía, 28, killed her ex-partner, José Manuel Encarnación Encarnación, 32, with several stab wounds during an incident at her home, located in the La Nueva Barquita sector, in Santo Domingo Norte.Read more: Woman stabs her partner in San Francisco de Macorís; says she doesn't regret it
According to the preliminary report from the National Police, Sánchez acted in apparent self-defense, alleging that Encarnación entered her home at 4:50 in the morning and attempted to assault her. At that moment, the woman was returning home with two friends. After the events, she immediately surrendered to the authorities. The first documented case was recorded on the night of May 31 in the Rabo de Chivo sector, in San Francisco de Macorís, where Natalia de Jesús, 27 years old, stabbed her partner to death, Anderson Ortiz Ávalo, known as “Kike”. The crime occurred in the midst of a heated discussion inside the house they both shared.
A week later, also in San Francisco de Macorís, Lisbeth Jiménez García, 26, fatally stabbed her partner, Jorge Rodríguez, 35. According to unofficial information, the event would also have been triggered by a previous discussion. Authorities continue to investigate each case to establish responsibilities and determine if in some of them there was self-defense, as claimed by family members of at least one of the accused.
