COE maintains 12 provinces on green alert for rain and possible floods

Santo Domingo, DR. – The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported this Sunday that 12 provinces and the National District remain on green alert for possible urban and rural flooding, rising rivers, streams and ravines, as well as landslides. The provinces under alert are: Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, San Juan, Peravia, Azua, Barahona, Pedernales, Monte Plata, Duarte and San Pedro de Macorís. The COE urged the population to refrain from crossing rivers, streams, and ravines with high water volume, and to avoid the use of swimming areas due to the turbidity and force of the currents.

According to the bulletin from the National Meteorology Office (Onamet), in the morning, little rain and a sky with scattered clouds are expected. However, after midday, the combination of humidity, local effects, and the warm south/southeast wind will cause scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms, and wind gusts in provinces in the south, north, and the Central mountain range, as well as Gran Santo Domingo.

5,600 people have been evacuated

Also, the agency reported that more than 5,600 people have been evacuated and 1,021 homes were affected, while 49 aqueducts were impacted, leaving some 491,445 people without drinking water.

In San Juan, the Derrumbadero and Barista communities remain cut off after the overflow of the Vallejuelo River, while in Imbert, Puerto Plata, about 25 homes lost their roofs due to a strong wind. The COE reiterated to the public the need to remain attentive to official bulletins and follow the recommendations of civil protection agencies.
