Santo Domingo, RD.- The national deputy of the
Dominican Revolutionary Party (
PRD), Ramón Raposo denounced that he is waging a fierce fight for the plenary of the Lower House to settle the issue of blackouts, at a time when electrical interruptions affect a large part of the national territory.
The legislator’s complaint comes after he introduced a resolution in the most recent session of the Chamber of Deputies, accompanied by other opposition congressmen, with which he seeks the interpellation of the president of the Unified Council of Electricity Distribution Companies (CUED) Celso Marranzini, so that he explains to the country why so many blackouts despite the high rates that citizens have to pay.
In the session on Wednesday, September 3rd, Raposo requested the President of the Chamber of Deputies to place on the day’s agenda the issue of the interpellation regarding the long series of blackouts that are generating losses to the country’s productivity and that, according to the legislator, “have Dominican society disgusted.”
The issue generated controversy and captured public opinion and the media because despite the enormous efforts made by the leadership of the ruling party in the Chamber of Deputies to have the proposal presented by Congressman Ramón Raposo rejected by the plenary, the point of the appeal must be addressed in the next session because after two rounds of voting the ruling party was unable to obtain the necessary votes to allow the proposal to be rejected.
The interpellation initiative divided the ruling party’s caucus because, despite the rejection of the proposal, many legislators from the government party abstained and some chose to support it, alleging that they are also suffering the situation the country is going through in the face of the power outages.
The topic should be addressed in the next session that the Chamber of Deputies will hold next Wednesday, September 17th.
