Congresswoman Lidia Pérez justifies her claim in Jet Set case hearing: "The pain is still alive"

Santo Domingo.- Deputy Lidia Pérez, sister of singer Rubby Pérez, who died in the Jet Set tragedy, spoke out with harsh criticism this Monday against Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, and in particular against their lawyer, during the hearing on the case. Pérez stated that his reaction was not an act of insubordination, but a manifestation of the pain of the families affected by the tragedy, which occurred nine months ago and left dozens dead. "What I did this morning was not insubordination. It was a fair expression, translating the pain of many of those involved in Jet Set," he pointed out. The legislator called the Espaillat brothers' lawyer a "devil's advocate" for his defense of what, in Pérez's opinion, was indefensible.

He acknowledged that, although it is his job to defend his clients, society and family members label his actions as historic for having defended what caused so much pain. Likewise, Lidia Pérez criticized the indifference of the institutions to the magnitude of the tragedy, which claimed the lives of more than 400 people, including artists, athletes, workers of the place and other citizens. “Lives of people from all levels of Dominican society were lost and it seemed that there was indifference, as if they were just numbers,” she said. The deputy also emphasized the need for legislative measures and infrastructure supervision to prevent similar tragedies from happening again. She pointed out that a bill on construction supervision has been submitted, and asked the Executive Branch to support initiatives that guarantee safety in public and private buildings. "We want to see concrete actions. Not only that what the law says is done, but that steps are taken to ensure this does not happen again," he affirmed. Pérez called on artists and musicians, as well as society in general, to recognize the magnitude of the tragedy and assume an active role in the memory of the victims.
