San Francisco de Macorís. – The senator for the province of Duarte, Franklin Romero, clarified this Monday that the violent events that recently occurred in San Francisco de Macorís and in different parts of the province cannot be attributed solely to the lack of action by the National Police, since the problem has deeper roots linked to social violence.
Romero pointed out that the province of Duarte has over 300,000 inhabitants, of whom nearly 200,000 live in San Francisco de Macorís alone, and that this population reality contrasts with the very limited police presence, which represents a challenge to guarantee citizen security.

However, he emphasized that social violence is not the same as insecurity: "Social violence arises from family disintegration, lack of opportunities, unemployment and exclusion, while citizen insecurity is linked to delinquency and organized crime that require being confronted with greater police endowment, better equipment and more effective security strategies," the legislator expressed. The congressman also highlighted that the central government is making the greatest efforts to carry out a comprehensive police reform and allocate more resources to law enforcement, so that a closer, more professional body capable of responding to the challenges of today's society is achieved. Likewise, Romero highlighted that the statistics reflect how in the last two years criminal violence has decreased in the province of Duarte, thanks to the joint work between the authorities and society. "We remain committed to maintaining and deepening that rate of reduction, so that our province is every day a safer and more convivial space," he affirmed. Finally, he reiterated his commitment to continue working with the Government, local authorities, churches, community organizations, and productive sectors to restore peace, tranquility, and the trust of the Duartian population.
