Santo Domingo.- Former President Hipólito Mejía favored this Wednesday the "urgent" regularization of Haitian labor in the country.
"It must be done urgently," Mejía responded to journalists after being consulted on this matter while attending an event to mark the 62nd anniversary of the National Council of Private Enterprise (Conep). It is, he affirmed, about "real needs" in sectors such as agriculture and construction, for which he favored "sectoral agreements" in that regard.Likewise, the former president confirmed his attendance tomorrow at the meeting convened by President Luis Abinader in the Economic and Social Council (CES) to address the crisis in Haiti and its implications for the Dominican Republic.
The former presidents Leonel Fernández and Danilo Medina have also been invited to the meeting, in accordance with what was agreed upon at the meeting held between the four politicians on May 14 at the Ministry of Defense. That day, Abinader and the three former presidents agreed that the situation of instability in Haiti represents a threat not only to its own population, but also to the entire region, especially to the Dominican Republic.
At the same time, they reaffirmed the "need" to apply immigration law with "firmness" and respect for human rights, through operations to apprehend and deport undocumented Haitians.Last October, the Government implemented a massive deportation program and has strengthened border controls with a fence it is building on the border, the use of advanced technology equipment, and the deployment of thousands of troops.
Likewise, it has tightened measures internally with decisions such as deporting undocumented Haitians who go to public health centers.
