Court of Appeals upholds coercion against Espaillat brothers for Jet Set tragedy

Santo Domingo.– The Third Chamber of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeals of the National District rejected 26 appeals, including that of the Public Ministry, against the coercive measures imposed on the brothers Antonio and Maribel Espaillat for the case of the Jet Set tragedy, in which 235 people died and more than 180 were injured. The plaintiffs sought to replace the current measure with pre-trial detention, but the court maintained the economic guarantee of 50 million pesos, periodic presentation, and a ban on leaving the country, as ordered in the first instance by Judge Fátima Veloz, of the Permanent Attention Court of the National District.

The decision was unanimously confirmed by magistrates Nancy María Joaquín Guzmán, July Elizabeth Tamaríz Núñez and Mariana Daneira García Castillo, through Criminal Resolution no. 502-01-2025-SRES-00246. In its ruling, spanning 124 pages, the court declared that the challenged resolution “fully complies with the current legal framework” and, therefore, ratified the measure “in all its parts”. With this decision, the Espaillat brothers will continue under the imposed restrictions while the judicial process for the tragedy that occurred in the entertainment center progresses.
