National District.– In an atmosphere of reflection and anticipation, family members of the victims of the Jet Set tragedy held a solemn moment of prayer this Monday outside the Ciudad Nueva Palace of Justice, minutes before the start of the hearing in which the decision on the judicial process involving the nightclub owners will be announced.
Amidst hugs, prayers, and messages of strength, those present offered up prayers in memory of their loved ones and demanded justice for the 236 people who lost their lives in the collapse of the establishment’s roof.
Meanwhile, a large security contingent was deployed in the vicinity of the courthouse. Police officers, specialized units, and mobile barriers were placed at various points to ensure order and security throughout the day, given the presence of family members, lawyers, representatives of the victims, members of the press, and various figures linked to the case, including the sister of the late merengue singer Ruby Pérez.
Judge Raymundo Mejía, of the First Instruction Court of the National District, is scheduled to announce this Monday his decision on whether siblings Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, owners of the Jet Set nightclub, will be sent to a full trial for involuntary manslaughter.
Likewise, the magistrate must rule on the request submitted by some plaintiffs to change the legal classification of the case file so that the facts are heard as voluntary manslaughter.

The case is related to the tragedy that occurred in the early hours of April 8, 2025, when the roof of the Jet Set nightclub collapsed during an artistic event, causing the death of 236 people and leaving more than a hundred injured, in one of the most tragic events recorded in the recent history of the Dominican Republic.
The decision issued by the court will mark a crucial stage in the judicial process that seeks to establish responsibility for the tragedy and respond to the demands for justice from the victims and their families.
