SANTO DOMINGO. – A court in the National District sentenced 20 years in prison to one of those involved in a robbery with violence and attempted murder against a merchant from a currency exchange house located in the Colonial Zone.
The condemned is Misael Martínez Contreras, alias Misael, whose guilt was proven through the evidence presented by the Public Ministry, represented by the litigating prosecutor Julia Laury Vásquez.

According to the investigation, the events occurred on December 25, 2024, around 1:45 PM, on Duarte Street corner El Conde, when several individuals attacked the victim while he was working in a currency exchange business. The file states that the victim received multiple blows to the head with a brick, which caused extremely serious injuries, leading to their admission for more than a month in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private health center in the capital. After committing the assault, the accused stole the hard drive of the establishment's security camera system, as well as a million-dollar sum of cash. As a result of the investigative work, the Public Ministry managed to identify and arrest the now-convicted on January 3, 2025, seizing a firearm that he was carrying illegally. The Fourth Collegiate Court of the National District found Martínez Contreras guilty of criminal association, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, and illegal possession of a firearm, in violation of articles 265, 266, 2, 295, 296, 297, 302, 379 and 382 of the Dominican Penal Code, as well as articles 66, 67 and 69 of Law 631-16, on the Control and Regulation of Weapons, Ammunition and Related Materials. In the same process, other defendants were subjected, according to their degree of participation in the events. Likewise, a 15-year-old adolescent was brought before the corresponding jurisdiction, in accordance with the provisions of Law 136-03 on the Protection of the Fundamental Rights of Children and Adolescents. The court, composed of judges Keyla Pérez Santana and Arisleyda Méndez Batista, along with judge Elías Santini, ordered that the convicted person serve the sentence in the Najayo Hombres Correction and Rehabilitation Center.
