Nazario Mercedes, known as the "serial killer," is sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Ocoa.- — The Collegiate Tribunal of the Court of First Instance of the Judicial District of Ocoa imposed a sentence of 30 years in prison on Nazario Mercedes, 66 years old and known in various judicial processes as an alleged “serial killer”, after being found guilty of the death of Daylin Darmelin de los Santos Ramírez, 23 years old, mother of four children, in an event that occurred on March 19, 2022 in the municipality of Rancho Arriba, province of San José de Ocoa.

The court found Mercedes responsible for the murder of de los Santos Ramírez, a case that moved the community due to the circumstances of the event and the victim's age. The young woman, who had four children, was killed in her own community, which prompted an intense investigation by the Public Ministry and mobilization of judicial authorities.

Nazario Mercedes has been implicated in various judicial processes for his alleged involvement in multiple homicides of women in different provinces of the country, some of them with events dating back to the 1990s. Among the cases attributed to him are crimes recorded in San Pedro de Macorís (1995), 2008, as well as an attempted homicide in 2014, and the death of another woman in Villa Altagracia in 2024, which contributed to the social perception that he was an aggressor with a history of violence against women. The sentence, which seeks to apply the most severe penalties contemplated in the Dominican Penal Code for crimes of this nature, includes a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison, which Mercedes will begin to serve in a penitentiary center in the country. Family members of the victim and other people linked to the cases have closely followed the development of the judicial process, which also represents a message of rigor in the fight against violence against women and the search for justice in events that have generated national shock.
