The prosecuting body, represented by prosecutor Wendy María Martínez Garabitos, demonstrated in court the seriousness of the events and the need to impose preventive detention on the accused so that they can respond to the judicial process, the Public Ministry said in a note released this Thursday. The events occurred on the night of January 3, 2026, when Sergeant Félix Montero and his wife were traveling along Circunvalación Avenue, in Los Bajos de Haina, on a motorcycle. Both were intercepted and held at gunpoint by the defendants De la Cruz Heredia (el Wa) and Pichardo (el Flaco), who were riding a high-displacement motorcycle. The non-commissioned officer tried to use his service weapon when the defendant De la Cruz Heredia fired several shots at him, causing his death. After obtaining the firearm, the aggressors left the place where Félix Montero died from gunshot wounds. Both defendants were arrested on January 5th. That same day, through an act of voluntary surrender, Francesca Rojas Paulino handed over to the authorities the officer's weapon, as well as a pistol that was used in the murder of Félix Montero. The National Police information does not offer details about the relationship between the accused and the person who delivered the weapons. Judge José Carlos Arias, of the Permanent Attention Court of San Cristóbal, sent the defendants to the Najayo Men's Correction and Rehabilitation Center.
