Santo Domingo. – National Congress legislators on Wednesday valued the decision of the United Nations Security Council to approve the transition of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, led by Kenya, towards a Gang Suppression Force (GSF), with the aim of restoring order in that nation.
Representative Ramón Bueno considered that the resolution is an achievement for the Dominican Republic, the result of President Luis Abinader's insistence before international organizations. In addition, he urged the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) to maintain deportation operations.
"It is an achievement of the country, the result of the coherence of President Abinader, who never tired of asking international organizations that the situation in neighboring Haiti is a national and regional problem. We salute with great strength and thank them for their intention to come to the aid of Haiti, and we invite the National Directorate of Migration to continue deporting all illegal Haitians," Bueno expressed.
From his side, the spokesman for the Liberal Renewal Bloc, Jorge Manuel Zorrilla, pointed out that this decision responds to the clamor of the Dominican people and the efforts of different leaders.
"The clamor of the Dominican people and the political leadership of the Dominican Republic was heard in accordance with the need for the international community to assume responsibility for the Haitian issue. That work that President Luis Abinader was developing together with the other presidents of the country in the past —Leonel Fernández, Danilo Medina and Hipólito Mejía— brought that result (Gang Elimination Force). It is laudable, important and adds value to our sovereignty," he affirmed.
Senator Antonio Marte warned about the need to reinforce border security due to the possibility of Haitian criminals crossing into Dominican territory to escape the multinational force.

"I believe that the Dominican Republic, due to the danger it may cause and the fear that Haitians may have, should reinforce the border. The Americans are going with an order, and that is to organize Haiti so that there are elections," Marte pointed out. Meanwhile, Senator Franklin Romero recalled that the solution to the Haitian crisis will be a prolonged process. “The problem in Haiti is not going to be solved in two days. 5,000 may come, but it will be solved over time, because we have already seen how long MINUSTAH (UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti) was. It is an activity that requires a lot of effort, a lot of money and a lot of time, but the most important thing is that it can be solved”, he stated. It should be remembered that in October 2023, at the request of the Haitian government, the UN approved the deployment of a multinational force for one year. However, after fifteen months of operations, the mission failed to regain territory controlled by armed gangs, despite attempts to neutralize their leaders. The Security Council resolution was adopted with 12 votes in favor, 3 abstentions (China, Russia, and Pakistan) and none against.
