Santo Domingo.- Interdiction units of the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) detained twelve Haitian minors in irregular migratory condition who were caught at night after "instilling fear and intimidating" the local population in alleged criminal actions on the border in which they used bladed weapons, the institution reported this Monday.
Minors were moving in groups, creating tension and unease in the communities, the immigration authority indicated in a statement.

The arrests were the result of intelligence work following complaints from neighbors and were made "applying the practices and procedures established by national institutions related to the situation of minors, regardless of their nationality, and international standards regarding the protection of unaccompanied children". The minors were taken to "safe environments in the processing center that the DGM administers in the area" to proceed with the corresponding measures along with the authorities of the General Prosecutor's Office for Children, Adolescents and Family, an organ of the Attorney General's Office, and the National Council for Childhood and Adolescence. For the DGM, minors "constitute an extremely defenseless population, exposed to the dangers of human trafficking, gender-based violence, child labor exploitation, and all kinds of vulnerabilities. The DGM recalled that "interdicted individuals are guaranteed all their rights, including the recognition of their particular needs".
