Santo Domingo.- The Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, and the Executive Director of the Airport Department, Víctor Pichardo, supervised this Thursday the modernization and expansion works being carried out at the Las Américas International Airport (AILA).
During the tour, the authorities learned firsthand about the progress of the modernization project of the Baggage Handling System (BHS), an initiative developed in strategic alliance with Alstef Group, a global provider with more than 60 years of experience in automated baggage handling solutions, recognized for their high efficiency, safety and adaptability in airports around the world, Aerodom said in a note.

This investment includes the comprehensive remodeling and capacity expansion of the system, the incorporation of cutting-edge technology with EDS Standard 3 scanning units, and the implementation of the specialized BAGWARE software. These improvements will optimize inspection processes, raise safety standards, and reinforce operational efficiency, while ensuring the continuity of operations. The project is scheduled to be fully completed by the end of this year. Also, according to the information, progress was presented on the construction of the new passenger terminal at AILA, a transformative investment exceeding 350 million dollars that will mark "a before and after" for regional air connectivity, with its operation scheduled for 2028. Aerodom stated that, after successfully completing a ten-month preparatory phase, the company is now moving forward with the initial works under strict safety protocols and a phased planning that ensures the normal operation of the current terminal. The new Terminal 2 will operate independently and complementarily to the existing one, with a capacity to serve up to 4 million passengers per year.
