PLD calls sentence against Alexis Medina “bad faith”

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) reacted this Thursday to the sentence of the Second Collegiate Tribunal of the National District that sentenced Alexis Medina, brother of former President Danilo Medina, to seven years in prison for acts of corruption committed during the past government administration. The opposition organization described the ruling as “in bad faith” and asserted that it confirms what they had denounced from the beginning of the process: a political use of the Public Ministry to persecute former officials and leaders of the PLD party.

In a statement, the PLD highlighted that several defendants were cleared, which —according to them— demonstrates the non-existence of a “criminal structure” and the lack of evidentiary support for the accusation. “Justice is not built with headlines, but with evidence,” the document underlines. The party criticized the inclusion in the file of people who, based on the available evidence, should have been excluded from the outset, and denounced that for five years an attempt was made to replace due process with smear campaigns, in what they describe as a case of lawfare or judicialization of politics. Likewise, he warned that this type of action weakens democracy and distorts the fight against corruption, turning it into an instrument of revenge. The PLD reiterated its commitment to legality, truth, and the defense of public freedoms, ensuring that it will remain vigilant against any attempt to affect judicial independence in the country.
