Ramón Alburquerque is buried after funeral honors are paid to him

Santo Domingo. – The remains of the engineer, former senator and political leader Ramón Alburquerque were buried this Sunday in the Jardín Memorial cemetery, after receiving extensive funeral honors at the Dominican Municipal League (LMD), the National Congress and the National House of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), in recognition of his political, intellectual and human trajectory. The ceremonies began at the Dominican Municipal League, the scene of one of the most remembered episodes of his public life in 1999, when, in a context of high political tension, he starred in a gesture considered a milestone in the defense of democratic institutions.

Subsequently, the coffin was moved to the National Congress, where an official tribute was paid, led by the President of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santos, who highlighted Alburquerque's legislative legacy and his firm commitment to democracy.

“His passion as a legislator and his defense of institutionalism taught us how democracy is exercised and how it is protected. Ramón Alburquerque was a true defender of our democracy at all levels,” said De los Santos.

The President of the Senate highlighted that Alburquerque was the author and co-author of more than one hundred laws, including the Social Security Law, the Hydrocarbons Law, the General Electricity Law, the Environment and Natural Resources Law, the General Telecommunications Law, as well as the creation of the State Secretariats for Women and Culture, in addition to important regulations on the stock market, copyright, and border development. “His departure leaves a void in the political and intellectual life of the country, but also an invaluable legacy of free thought, democratic commitment and sincere love for the Dominican Republic,” he added. During the tribute in the Senate, a guard of honor was held, composed of, among others, Ricardo de los Santos, Jesús (Chu) Vásquez, Milagros Ortiz Bosch, José Ignacio Paliza, Ginette Bournigal and Antonio Marte. The honors continued at the PRM's national headquarters, where leaders and militants bid farewell to one of the most influential figures in contemporary Dominican politics.

In that scenario, the president of the PRM, José Ignacio Paliza, delivered an emotional speech in which he highlighted Alburquerque's human dimension and his deep respect for democracy. "Ramón was a man who loved nature, poetry, and music; anything but a violent man. That day he came loaded only with the responsibility that corresponded to him as president of the Senate, accompanied only by the Constitution," he affirmed, when evoking the 1999 episode in the LMD.

Paliza also shared a personal testimony, noting that Alburquerque opened the doors of his home to him and showed him "the best side of politics", decisively influencing his training as a leader. A guard of honor headed by Paliza, Eddy Olivares, Nelson Arroyo, Roberto Fulcar, Gloria Reyes, Rafael Santos, Franklin García Fermín and Samuel Pereyra was held at the PRM National House, with the participation of other members of the executive board and representatives of party sections abroad. With his burial, the Dominican Republic bids farewell to a key figure in its recent political history, whose legacy remains inscribed in the legislative, institutional, and democratic life of the country.
