Santo Domingo.- The Senate of the Republic approved this Tuesday, in a single discussion, two loans totaling 600 million dollars intended to strengthen climate action policies and finance a comprehensive drinking water and sanitation program in the Punta Cana-Bávaro area.
The initiatives, submitted by the Executive Branch, were backed with 23 votes in favor and four against.
One of the financings, for 200 million dollars, was agreed upon with the Andean Development Corporation to support public policies related to climate action and resilience against climate change.
The second loan, for 400 million dollars, was signed with the Inter-American Development Bank and will be executed by the National Institute of Potable Water and Sewerage to improve access to drinking water, sanitation, and sustainable water resource management in Punta Cana and Bávaro.

The Fuerza del Pueblo bench voted against both initiatives.

Senator Edward Espiritusanto questioned the country’s debt level and asserted that the results of previous loans intended to address the effects of climate change are not reflected. According to his statement, more than 1.4 billion dollars have been approved during the current administration for those purposes.
