Santo Domingo. - Following the drug trafficking charges filed by the United States against Fabio Augusto Jorge-Puras, alias "Vecino," former advisor to the Executive Branch and financier of the Águilas Cibaeñas, opposition lawmakers have lashed out at the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), pointing out alleged links between the ruling party and drug trafficking.
The deputy of the Fuerza del Pueblo, Tobías Crespo, stated that the PRM “is full of drug traffickers”, considering that this new case adds to a list of scandals that have characterized the management of this political organization.

“They have to ask government officials and the president if they knew him (Fabio Jorge-Puras), if they didn't know him, but the PRM is really full of narcos,” the legislator said when questioned about it. According to Crespo, with all the cases that have come to light in which people from the ruling party have been linked to drug trafficking, the country seems to have become a "narco-state." For his part, the also opposition member Rafael Castillo said he was not surprised by this new case and attributed the situation to the lack of internal controls in the PRM regarding the people who make up its ranks. He affirmed that, in its eagerness to reach power, the ruling party would have accepted handouts from any source. "What we have already seen is a habit, and it is not just any neighborhood leader, but high-ranking leaders, so when the river makes noise it's because it brings stones. We have only seen one party involved in all this, because we see that the Fuerza del Pueblo makes an extreme purge of anyone who is going to be a candidate, what happens is that there are no filters.", he pointed out. According to the data, a Federal Jury of the Southern District of Florida, USA, accused Jorge-Puras, as well as Gaspar Antonio Polanco-Virella, alias "El Grande", for conspiring to traffic and import cocaine into the United States from the Dominican Republic, Colombia and other countries. The accusation falls within the actions carried out by the United States Department of Justice against international drug trafficking networks with operations in the Caribbean and South America. In this context, the authorities do not rule out that the process may lead to requests for judicial cooperation or eventual extradition requests to the Dominican Republic.
