Higüey. – Former President Hipólito Mejía described as “nonsense” the accusations of alleged irregularities at the Banco Agrícola, and defended the management of its current administrator, Fernando Durán.
Mejía assured that the administration of Durán has been more efficient and clear than the one he himself carried out when he held the position of Secretary of Agriculture, highlighting the transparency and responsible management of the state financial entity at present. You may be interested in: Hipólito Mejía values environmental and social impact of the "Plastics for Toys" program
"People talk without having support, they talk just to talk, and the Agricultural Bank is well managed. Before there was stealing, now there isn't. I guarantee it," Mejía pointed out. The former president's statements come amid a wave of public complaints that have emerged in recent weeks, pointing to an alleged "flood" of million-dollar loans granted to people who are not linked to agricultural activities.Faced with these statements, last week the administrator of the Agricultural Bank, Fernando Durán, categorically rejected any irregularity during a press conference, stating that the institution is solid and maintains a responsible management of its resources.
Durán reported that the assets of Banco Agrícola currently amount to RD$45,871 million, starting from RD$43,243.9 million on January 1, 2025, and assured that: "the entity does not give away money, since every loan granted is recovered and is backed by notarial signatures". The statements of former President Hipólito Mejía were offered in Higüey, within the framework of the solemn mass in commemoration of the Virgen de la Altagracia, where he reiterated his support for the management of the Agricultural Bank and called not to create "unnecessary alarms" around a key institution for the agricultural sector of the country.
