La Altagracia, RD. – A tragic accident that occurred on Saturday night in the community of La Ceiba del Salado, La Altagracia province, left a preliminary toll of more than 20 people dead and dozens injured, according to the first reports from the area.
According to witnesses, the incident occurred when a garbage truck suffered a brake failure and crashed into a group of people who were sharing and consuming alcoholic beverages on the public road.

Among the injured are several children who were traveling in a van, which was also hit by the heavy vehicle. The accident has shocked the entire province. So far, the authorities have confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene, so a search operation is underway to find him. Relief organizations, including units of the 9-1-1 National Emergency System, Civil Defense, and the Fire Department, immediately went to the scene to provide assistance to those affected and transport the injured to nearby health centers.
