Tragedy in La Altagracia: Accident in La Ceiba del Salado leaves at least 20 dead

La Altagracia, RD. – A tragic accident that occurred on Saturday night in the community of La Ceiba del Salado, La Altagracia province, left a preliminary toll of more than 20 people dead and dozens injured, according to the first reports from the area. According to witnesses, the incident occurred when a garbage truck suffered a brake failure and crashed into a group of people who were sharing and consuming alcoholic beverages on the public road.

Among the injured are several children who were traveling in a van, which was also hit by the heavy vehicle. The accident has shocked the entire province. So far, the authorities have confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene, so a search operation is underway to find him. Relief organizations, including units of the 9-1-1 National Emergency System, Civil Defense, and the Fire Department, immediately went to the scene to provide assistance to those affected and transport the injured to nearby health centers. The competent authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident, while the community remains dismayed by the magnitude of the tragedy.
