Santo Domingo, DR.– The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) reacted this Tuesday to the criticism regarding the state of the National Flag flying on its main campus and assured that it will be replaced in the coming days.
The university’s Vice Rector of Extension, Rosalía Sosa, explained that the deterioration of the national emblem is due to weather conditions, especially the strong winds that have affected the fabric.
“The strong winds caused it to deteriorate and break,” the official stated, while offering apologies for the situation.
Sosa reported that the university has already initiated the process to acquire new flags, with the goal of replacing those that are damaged as soon as possible.
Likewise, he/she thanked the citizens for their observations and highlighted the importance of preserving national symbols in proper conditions.

The UASD’s response comes after images circulated of the National Flag visibly torn and frayed on the university campus, a situation that sparked questions because Law 210-19 on the Use of Patriotic Symbols prohibits displaying deteriorated flags in public institutions.
The legislation also establishes that, once removed, a flag in poor condition must be destroyed through a respectful procedure, preferably through incineration carried out in accordance with the corresponding protocol.
