AES Dominicana, headed by its president Edwin De los Santos, received the United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Leah Campos, at the facilities of the AES Andrés energy complex, as part of an institutional agenda aimed at presenting the company's main investment projects in energy infrastructure, as well as the expansion of the natural gas import and distribution capacity in the country.
De los Santos presented to the ambassador the relevance of this energy platform, highlighting that the investment made by the company to date exceeds US$2.4 billion, which makes it the largest capital investment from the United States in the Dominican Republic. This investment has contributed to the transformation and modernization of the national energy park, bringing the benefits of this critical fuel to multiple segments of the Dominican productive apparatus for more than two decades.
During the tour of the facilities, De los Santos also highlighted that natural gas of American origin today represents one of the main items of trade between both countries, with the Dominican Republic being the largest importer of North American natural gas in the entire Latin American region.
Within the framework of the agenda, the strategic importance of the natural gas terminal was addressed, as well as its expansion capacity in a reliable manner, under a strategic growth model called "LNG plug and play", designed to meet the growing energy demand of the country in an agile and safe way.
AES Dominicana's reception, export, and regasification terminal is consolidated as the main and most efficient entry point for natural gas from the United States to the Dominican Republic, positioning the company as the largest importer of US natural gas in the Dominican market. During 2025, natural gas imports totaled 4,000,000 m³ of LNG, surpassing the record achieved the previous year.
Currently, AES Dominicana, together with its strategic partner ENADOM, supplies natural gas to seven generation units that provide 1,800 megawatts of reliable and more environmentally friendly energy to the Dominican electrical system. The existing platforms allow for an immediate increase in demand by approximately 1,000 MW. Likewise, the company supplies natural gas to four distribution companies, which market it in the industrial, commercial, vehicular, tourism, and free zone segments.
The visit also allowed for a review of AES's long-term vision in the country and the role of its investments in strengthening energy capacity, supply continuity, and infrastructure development aligned with the current and future needs of the Dominican electricity system.
