Dominican Republic is emerging among the world's fastest-growing economies, according to Harvard

The Dominican Republic is positioned among the countries with the best economic growth prospects globally, according to projections from the "Harvard Growth Lab," a research center at Harvard University. According to the Atlas of Economic Complexity, the country would register an average annual growth of 3.82% in its real GDP between 2024 and 2034, placing it among the most dynamic economies in the medium term.

The report highlights a key fact: the Dominican Republic is the only country in Latin America and the Caribbean that is among the top 20 in the world ranking for per capita GDP growth for that period, which demonstrates an outstanding performance adjusted for population. These projections are based on the Economic Complexity Index (ECI), which assesses the productive capacity of countries based on the diversity and sophistication of their exports. In that sense, Harvard underlines that economies with more complex productive structures tend to sustain higher and more stable growth over time. For the Dominican case, the study recognizes advances in economic diversification, with sectors such as tourism, free zones, services, and industrial exports, although it warns of persistent challenges in productivity, institutional quality, and inequality. Regarding macroeconomic data, Harvard classifies the Dominican Republic as an upper-middle-income country, ranked 59th among 145 economies by GDP per capita. With a population of 10.8 million inhabitants, the GDP per capita reaches 11,541 dollars (29,192 dollars in purchasing power parity for 2024). Furthermore, the GDP per capita growth has averaged 2.9% in the last five years, surpassing the regional average.
