Washington,.- The United States Treasury Department authorized this Thursday a temporary 30-day exemption to allow shipments of Russian oil stranded at sea to be sold to Indian refiners.
The measure was announced by the Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, on his official X account, who specified that the authorization "will not provide a significant financial benefit to the Russian government, as it only authorizes transactions involving oil already stranded at sea."

Bessent added that India "is an essential partner of the United States, and we fully anticipate that New Delhi will increase purchases of American oil". In February, Trump had announced that after a conversation with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the Asian nation would stop buying Russian oil to acquire that of Venezuela. At the time, the US president said the measure would help to stop the war in Ukraine. The temporary exemption also comes in a context of growing tension in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important strategic routes for the transport of world crude oil. Recently, Iran has threatened to close the passage, which could seriously affect the global energy supply and push up oil prices. "This provisional measure will alleviate the pressure caused by Iran's attempt to hold global energy hostage," Bessent concluded.
