Washington.- The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Wednesday that the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, assured him that his country will stop buying Russian oil, as part of the efforts to reduce Moscow's energy revenues in response to its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Trump said he didn't like that Modi "bought oil from Russia because it allows him to continue his absurd war", during a press conference at the White House. You may be interested in: Donald Trump officially signs the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act'
The Republican made it clear that the Indian Prime Minister gave him assurances that he will not buy more Russian oil gradually due to India's dependence on this input. India, along with China, has been one of the largest importers of Russian crude, benefiting from discounted prices following Western sanctions. Trump had imposed tariffs on Indian imports to pressure the country, avoiding similar measures against China due to ongoing trade tensions. "Now my goal is for China to do the same," Trump added, regarding his intention for Beijing to stop buying Moscow's oil. In the past, India has long defended its imports of Russian oil as essential for national energy security, with Russia being its largest current supplier. According to experts, a disruption in imports would mark a significant geopolitical shift and influence other buyers of Russian oil. Trump acknowledged that the elimination of these imports will take time, but stated that the process is already underway. The development follows a recent meeting between Modi and Trump's nominee for ambassador, Sergio Gor, which focused on defense, trade, and technology. Although India faces economic repercussions for switching suppliers, lower global oil prices could soften the impact.
