Santo Domingo.- The traditional Lechones de Santiago once again stole the show during the National Carnival Parade 2026, held on the malecón of Santo Domingo, but this time with a message that transcended the celebration. Beyond the colorfulness and music characteristic of the Dominican carnival, Los Lechones took advantage of the stage to promote awareness about autism, turning their participation into a social call.
The traditional national carnival parade, in addition to being one of the most important and popular cultural festivals in the country, has been transformed into a space where troupes and characters also express ideas and social causes. Every year, thousands of people gather on George Washington Avenue to enjoy the show, which, in addition to entertainment, becomes a platform to transmit messages of identity, inclusion, and reflection.

On this occasion, the representation of Santiago de los Caballeros particularly caught the attention with one of its iconic Lechones de Santiago. The character used their characteristic costume, full of colors and details, to send a message of awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), generating applause and positive comments among the parade attendees. The suit incorporated multiple colorful puzzle pieces, a symbol widely associated with autism awareness. According to Autism Parenting Magazine, this emblem has been used since 1963 to represent the complexity, diversity, and challenges faced by people on the autism spectrum in integrating into a predominantly neurotypical world. This symbol usually appears in initiatives such as murals, puzzle piece ribbons, and the well-known multicolored ribbon, elements that seek to promote empathy, understanding, and visibility towards people with autism. Precisely these elements were part of the design of the costume presented by the Lechón in the parade, reinforcing the message of inclusion and respect. Furthermore, at the top of the suit, a figure of two children linked together stood out in front of a heart-shaped world map, an image that symbolized unity, solidarity, and the need to build a more conscious and inclusive society for people with autism around the planet.
