"Animals" debuts with almost 2,000 viewers on its first day

Santo Domingo, R.D. — The Dominican film “Animales” registered almost 2,000 viewers on its opening day, marking a particularly significant start within the recent behavior of the box office. The result is particularly relevant when considering its R rating (for those 18 and over) and a proposal that positions itself outside of comedy, a combination that historically reduces the potential audience. In that context, the film's performance is perceived as exceptionally strong.

Beyond the figure, the data reveals something greater: the audience responded to a film that bets on a more diverse, more adult and risky cinema, confirming that there is space in theaters for stories that expand the range of genres and tones of Dominican cinema. The opening day of "Animales" was positioned above recent titles outside of comedy such as: "A tiro limpio" and "Baño de Mujeres", redefining the standard for Dominican cinema, confirming that adult and risky proposals can also open strongly. About the film, José Ramón Alamá, producer and director, explains: “Animales is a progression: an ascending curve of anxiety that starts from the portrait of an elite that perceives itself as civilized and under control, but that is rarely seen portrayed from within. The film explores how privilege does not protect from emptiness, desire, or human contradictions. Sometimes a spark is enough for everything to burn. Animales is an intimate portrait, not a denunciation, and that is precisely why it is more disturbing.”
The film stars Pamela Sued, Vitaly Sánchez, Pedro Casals, Mar Bonelly, Christian Rizek and Vacaloca, along with performances by David Maler, Nashla Bogaert and Frank Perozo.

Synopsis

A group of friends who have known each other all their lives discover that there are doors that should never be opened. What begins as a game of desire turns into a spiral of jealousy, lies, and betrayals that devastates their relationships. They will soon understand that we all have an animal side.

Finally, Bougroup reported that “Animals” will have its international premiere on Disney+ as part of its strategic alliance with The Walt Disney Company, expanding its exhibition window towards audiences outside the country.
