LOS ANGELES.– Tom Hanks will return to the baseball universe with “The Comebacker”, a film that will mark his return to the sports genre more than three decades after starring in A League of Their Own (1992), considered one of the classics of cinema about this sport.
The production will be directed by Marielle Heller, with whom Hanks already worked on A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. The film is based on a short story by writer Dave Eggers, who has also served as inspiration for other adaptations starring the American actor.
On this occasion, Hanks will play a veteran pitching coach who helps a Major League pitcher rebuild his career and his life after suffering a serious injury from being hit in the head by a ball during a game. The story combines sports elements with a focus on personal improvement.
Sony Pictures confirmed that “The Comebacker” will hit theaters on July 30, 2027, a date chosen to coincide with the Major League season. The project will be produced by Playtone, Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s company, in collaboration with Major League Baseball (MLB), with the goal of offering a faithful representation of the sport.
In addition to Hanks, specialized media report that the studio is in talks to add singer Bad Bunny and Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo to the cast, although their participation has not yet been officially confirmed.
