Johnny Depp, originally John Christopher Depp II, was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on June 9, 1963, is an American actor, director, film producer and musician. Son of civil engineer John Christopher Depp and waitress Betty Sue Palmer, who died in 2016. He has three older siblings. Daniel, who is a writer, and two sisters: Christie, who works as his personal administrator, and Debbie. In 1978, at fifteen, his parents divorced. His mother married Robert Palmer (died in 2000), who was a great source of inspiration for him. Subsequently, Depp said: "I can't say my childhood was perfect, if I did something wrong, I was hit, if not, also." Depp is of French, German, Irish, and Cherokee ancestry. Before working as an actor, he worked as a telephone pen salesman. About this job, he said: "You call people who don't want to receive your call. You put on your most fake voice and try to sell them a piece of crap pens with their names printed on them". After quitting, he worked as a mechanic.

He began his artistic career as a guitarist in a rock band called The Kids. He moved to Los Angeles seeking musical success before becoming an actor. His film career began in 1984, when he met Nicolas Cage through his wife Lori Anne Allison and the latter encouraged him to try his luck as an actor. His first role was in the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street, directed by Wes Craven. Between 1987–1990, he became famous with the television series 21 Jump Street, becoming a teen idol.

In 1991, he received his first Golden Globe nomination for his work in Edward Scissorhands. Despite having been nominated on nine other occasions, he only won it in 2008 for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In 2004, he was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and, the following year, for Finding Neverland, a work for which he was also a candidate for a BAFTA award.
