Geraldo Gabriel Santana, artistically known as El Poeta Callejero, is one of the most influential exponents of urban music in the Dominican Republic. His unique style, loaded with social messages and poetic lyrics, has established him as a distinctive voice in the genre, which he has imbued with awareness and depth.
Origin and Early Years of El Poeta Callejero
Born on June 8, 1989 in Mesopotamia, San Juan de la Maguana, El Poeta Callejero grew up in a rural environment under the care of his mother, Beatriz Santana Espinosa, and his maternal grandparents. Although he enjoyed a comfortable childhood, his life took a turn in 1998 when Hurricane George caused the San Juan dam to overflow, leaving him practically destitute.
From a very young age, he was forced to earn a living as a street vendor, facing social injustice up close, an experience that would later profoundly influence his lyrics and musical style.
Beginnings in the urban music of Geraldo Gabriel Santana
Although he began studying Law at the Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago (UTESA), he dropped out of the program in his third trimester to dedicate himself fully to music. His talent for improvising and rhyming led him to stand out in the La Batalla de Gallos contest, where he began to earn the respect of the public and the Dominican music industry.
Musical style and social message
Collaborations and artistic growth
During his rise in the urban scene, he has collaborated with important Dominican artists such as Lápiz Conciente, Toxic Crow, Joa, Don Miguelo, Pablo Piddy and Mozart La Para. One of his greatest hits, “El Deseo de Tenerte”, took him to the Premios Casandra 2011, and with “Bonita Bonita” he obtained a new nomination in 2012.
Internationalization and Tours
His career gained international recognition by opening for Daddy Yankee at the Palacio de los Deportes in Santo Domingo. Subsequently, he toured Europe, with more than 28 concerts that positioned him as a benchmark of the Dominican urban genre globally.
Personal life and family reconciliation
In his youth, El Poeta Callejero did not know his biological father, whom he only knew by name. However, in 2011 he managed to reunite with him, Luis Morillo, a musician with a talent for guitar and piano. Since then, they developed a close relationship that has positively influenced his life and emotional stability.
