Meet Eduardo “Yayo” Sanz Lovatón, now Minister of Industry and Commerce

Santo Domingo, R.D.– Eduardo José Sanz Lovatón, better known as Eduardo “Yayo” Sanz Lovatón, is a Dominican lawyer, professor, politician and public servant with extensive experience in public administration, law and academia, who will now head Industry, Commerce and Mipymes.

Sanz Lovatón was born on February 5, 1977 in Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional. He holds a law degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM). He completed studies for a Doctorate in Private International Law at the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris, as well as studies in Civil Law at the Panthéon-Assas University in France. In addition, she took specialized programs in Free Trade in the Americas (organized by Rice University and the OAS) and in professional leadership with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Washington, D.C. He has taught at universities such as PUCMM, UNIBE, APEC and the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).

Public and Political Career

Since August 2020, Sanz Lovatón served as General Director of the General Customs Directorate (DGA), a position from which he promoted the modernization of the Dominican customs system, incorporating inspection technologies and procedures that have increased efficiency, security, and tax collection.

During his administration, he has promoted the development of national logistics as a strategic engine to transform the Dominican Republic into a competitive logistics hub at the regional level, emphasizing the role of trade and port and airport infrastructure. In the political arena, he is a founding member of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and has held leadership positions within that organization, including the position of national secretary of Finance and member of its Executive Directorate.

Recognitions and Leadership

Due to his public work, Sanz Lovatón has received prominent recognitions, including the “Public Servant 2025” award granted by the Dominican Federation of Merchants, in recognition of his contribution to strengthening relations between national commerce and customs authorities. In addition, he has been frequently invited to participate in forums and meetings with representatives from the private and business sector, seeking to promote policies that boost the country's economic competitiveness.
