History of Acento.com.do, the independent digital newspaper of the Dominican Republic

Acento.com.do, known simply as Acento, is a Dominican digital newspaper founded on February 16, 2011 by journalists Fausto Rosario Adames and Gustavo Olivo Peña. It emerged as an informative and critical alternative after the disappearance of the media outlet Clave Digital, with the aim of preserving a space for free, investigative journalism committed to the public interest.

Acento Newspaper - a media outlet born from journalistic independence

The birth of Acento occurred in a context of transformations in the Dominican media ecosystem. The sale and subsequent closure of Clave Digital by Grupo Abrisa in 2010 left a void in the field of critical and independent press. In response, Fausto Rosario — former director of Clave Digital — decided to found a new media outlet that would take up that investigative spirit, but adapted to the digital environment, more agile and accessible for contemporary audiences. Acento was founded under the premise of being a newspaper without business or partisan ties, supported by own resources, strategic alliances and the ethical commitment of its editorial team. This basis allowed it to focus from the beginning on the production of rigorous, plural and analytical content.

Content and Editorial Focus of Acento

Acento publishes daily news, reports, analysis, and opinion articles on the main political, economic, social, and cultural events, both nationally and internationally. Its team has followed up on high-impact issues such as corruption, government transparency, human rights, justice, and the environment. With an editorial line focused on strengthening democracy and promoting critical thinking, Acento quickly positioned itself as a benchmark for online analysis journalism, earning the trust of readers, analysts, and opinion leaders.

Innovation and sustained growth

Since its founding, Acento has evolved along with new technologies, betting on responsive design, distribution on social networks, and the incorporation of audiovisual formats. Despite operating in an environment where digital advertising is dominated by large platforms, it has managed to maintain its independence through alternative sustainability models, including institutional sponsorships, collaborations, and donations. The media has also opened spaces for new voices of critical thought and has maintained specialized sections such as “Acento Opinión”, “Acento TV” and special coverage on elections, social justice, education and health.

Accent Nowadays

With over a decade of experience, Acento.com.do has established itself as one of the most respected digital portals in the Dominican Republic. Its journalistic impact, editorial credibility, and commitment to information transparency have made it a key piece within the map of Dominican media in the 21st century.
