History of the newspaper La Información de Santiago

The newspaper La Información, founded on November 16, 1915 in Santiago de los Caballeros, is the second oldest newspaper in the Dominican Republic and one of the most influential in the country. Since its inception, this media outlet has been a defender of human rights, national sovereignty, independence, and freedom of expression.

Its founders, Luis Franco Olavarrieta, Pedro and Antonio Hungría, and Alfredo Rojas, created this newspaper amidst a political, economic, and social crisis, with the firm purpose of serving the country and defending the interests of the population through a courageous, plural, and truthful journalistic exercise.

Commitment to Freedom of the Newspaper La Información

Barely a year after its founding, in 1916, the Dominican Republic was intervened by the United States. During that difficult period (1916-1924), La Información assumed a patriotic stance, opposing foreign control and defending the right to self-determination of the Dominican people. This vocation remained firm even during the dark years of the tyranny of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, when the newspaper and its journalists were subjected to persecution, censorship, and threats.

Throughout its more than 100 years of existence, the newspaper has promoted the democratic development of the country, supporting national causes, denouncing injustices, and fostering civic participation from its editorial line, always adhering to truthfulness, objectivity, and impartiality.

School of Journalism and Vanguard of Values

La Información has not only been a source of information, but also a school for generations of journalists, writers, thinkers, and artists. Figures such as Joaquín Balaguer, Rafael Estrella Ureña, Ercilia Pepín, Tomás Hernández Franco, Manuel del Cabral, Yoryi Morel, Rosa Smester, among others, passed through its pages.

In its editorials and articles, the newspaper has been a constant promoter of patriotic values, culture, education, art, science, and sports. It has also promoted important campaigns in favor of infrastructure projects and public policies for the benefit of the northern region and the entire country.

A modern transformation without losing its essence

In July 2020, La Información took an important step towards modernization by adopting the tabloid format, which is more agile, dynamic, and adaptable to new reading habits. This was the fourth major transformation of the newspaper since its creation: from a midday edition with lead printing in 1915, to the offset system and morning edition in the 80s, then to color printing and finally to its current version, in tabloid format.

Thanks to the leadership of the late doctor Príamo Rodríguez Castillo, also founder of the Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago (UTESA), the newspaper was rescued at a critical moment and relaunched with a progressive vision. Since then, it has consolidated as a heritage of Santiago, of the Cibao and of the entire country, with a renewed editorial proposal but faithful to its original principles.

Current Address and Journalistic Body

Today, La Información continues to be a benchmark for ethical and committed journalism, under the direction of sociologist Enmanuel Castillo. Its executive team is composed of:

  • Frank Rodríguez González, president of Nueva Editora La Información
  • Ingrid González, deputy director
  • Servio Cepeda Baret, head of Editorial Department
  • Ignacio Guerrero, deputy head of Editorial Department
  • Jéssica Domínguez, general administrator
The team also includes journalists Félix Parra, Ney Santana, Mariela López, Marilyn Ventura, photographer Carlos Chicón, and Gaudis Sánchez, in charge of digital editing, among other technicians and staff who make the daily production of the newspaper possible.

A Legacy That Continues

More than a century after its founding, La Información continues to be a bastion of responsible journalism, oriented towards collective well-being, the defense of natural resources, human dignity, and democratic stability. In a country marked by profound social, political, and economic transformations, this newspaper has remained as a beacon of freedom, truth, and public service.

Today, along with Listín Diario, it is one of the few Dominican newspapers that has reached the extraordinary figure of more than 107 years of uninterrupted circulation, which makes it a symbol of resistance, credibility and commitment to national history.
