Lima.- A 13-year-old Peruvian girl died shortly after giving birth at her home, located in a town in the Andean department of Huánuco, in central Peru, after having been the victim of an alleged sexual assault, according to the feminist organization Flora Tristán reported this Tuesday.
Through a brief statement shared on their social media, the women's rights organization denounced that the girl did not receive timely medical attention during childbirth and "her young age represented a risk."You may be interested in: Public Ministry halts real estate project in Las Terrenas due to environmental violations
"Every year, thousands of girls and adolescents in the country face forced pregnancies as a result of violence. The lack of prevention of this crime and the barriers to access therapeutic abortion directly impacts the lives of the most vulnerable," said Flora Tristán. She added that differentiated policies are urgently needed for prevention and for the care of victims of sexual violence, sanctioning aggressors and overcoming barriers to access therapeutic abortion in Peru. Local media reported that the minor gave birth on August 1 at her home, located in the district of Panao, in the province of Pachitea, without medical attention. The deceased girl's mother told journalists that the minor lost consciousness after the delivery and was found dead two hours later. The body was raised the next day due to how far the district is and, then, it was transferred to the morgue of Huánuco, where the autopsy will be performed. At the same time, tax, health, and police personnel arrived at the rural dwelling to investigate what had happened. The Corporate Criminal Prosecutor's Office of Pachitea (Huánuco) has taken on the case and is investigating how the minor became pregnant and if she was a victim of sexual violence.
