Lima, - A 4.2 magnitude earthquake shook this Thursday the coastal area of the region of Arequipa, in southern Peru, without any damage being reported so far, official sources reported.

The earthquake's depth was established at 28 kilometers and its intensity reached II in Lomas, a town located in the coastal province of Caraveli, about 540 kilometers south of Lima. The movement occurred in the same area where a 5.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded on Tuesday, which was felt strongly in Lomas. The Hydrography and Navigation Directorate of the Peruvian Navy reported -on its social media- that the earthquake did not generate a tsunami on the Peruvian coast. Neither the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) nor the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) reported that any damage had occurred, although they reiterated the prevention and safety measures that the authorities and the local population should take. The south of Peru is one of the regions with the highest seismic activity in the country because it is located in front of the Nazca submarine plate. Peru is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where about 80% of the world's seismic activity occurs, and the last devastating earthquake it suffered occurred in 2007, in the southern region of Ica, with a death toll of five hundred people and millions of dollars in material losses.
