The head of the body, Michael G. Sullivan, explained to local media that the agents intercepted him at the foot of a staircase near the west facade, pointed their weapons at him and ordered him to drop the shotgun. The suspect immediately obeyed and was arrested on the spot. The authorities detailed that the man was carrying a tactical vest, gloves, and additional ammunition. Inside the vehicle, a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask were also found. Due to the incident, authorities temporarily closed a section of Maryland Avenue, near the Garfield Monument, and requested citizen cooperation to collect possible recordings of the incident. The detainee was identified as Carter Camacho, a resident of Georgia, and faces charges for illicit activities, carrying a rifle without a license, and possession of unregistered firearms and ammunition. The Congress was not in session this week, but the episode occurs in a context of increasing threats against lawmakers, following a rise in investigations into communications and concerning behaviors directed against members of Congress and the Capitol complex.
