Goa is a common beach destination for Indian and international tourists, and the incident occurs in the middle of the high season in the state. The town of Arpora, where the burned-down Birch By Romeo Lane club is located, is a few kilometers from the popular beaches of Baga and Calangute, in the epicenter of North Goa, the area most frequented by tourists in that state. The Goa government chief visited the scene of the incident and requested a thorough investigation of the event. "The investigation will determine the exact cause of the fire and whether fire safety regulations and construction standards were met," said Sawant, He added that "those responsible will face the most rigorous measures established by law; any negligence will be firmly sanctioned." Goa, characterized by its beaches and by the hotels, clubs, discos and bars by the sea, is a popular tourist destination for Indian tourists and foreign visitors. The state is usually categorized as one of the safest in India. Fires are common in the country as the infrastructure does not have the best initial construction conditions. However, these types of incidents are more frequent in northern India.
