The convening of a special meeting of the OAS Permanent Council has also been requested
Cúcuta (Colombia).- The Government of Colombia convened a meeting of foreign ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to establish a position on the military attack by the United States on Venezuela in which President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured. The director of the Administrative Department of the Presidency of the Republic (Dapre), Angie Rodríguez, said in a press conference that the country summoned the foreign ministers of CELAC to articulate a regional position regarding the US attack that ended with the detention of Maduro, although she did not specify the date of the meeting. “Let’s remember that the president of the republic (Gustavo Petro) is the pro tempore president (of CELAC),” said the high official in Cúcuta, a Colombian city that has the main border crossing with Venezuela, where the Government installed a unified command post (PMU) in the face of the United States’ attack on the neighboring country. Hours earlier, the Brazilian Government indicated that it was evaluating the possibility of holding this CELAC meeting on Sunday and that the ministerial meeting by videoconference is being planned for 12:00 local time in Bogota (17:00 GMT), but that confirmation will depend on the presidency of the organization, in the hands of Colombia, which did not give further details in this regard. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed this Saturday that his country carried out “successfully a large-scale attack” on Venezuelan soil and that Maduro and Flores were “captured and taken out of the country”. Hours later, Maduro descended handcuffed from the Boeing 757 military aircraft that transported him to New York amid the extensive custody operation that accompanies him.You may be interested in: China calls on the U.S. to immediately release Maduro and demands a negotiated solution
Furthermore, the director of Dapre pointed out that Colombia, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, also promoted the convening of a meeting of that body to be held on Monday, a proposal that was officially supported by Russia and China, permanent members of the Security Council. The rotating presidency of the Council, which in January corresponds to Somalia, approved the convocation. Likewise, Rodríguez said that “a special meeting of the Permanent Council of the OAS (Organization of American States) has been requested,” as Petro had already stated this morning in a message posted on X after the attack.
