Bogota.- Colombia remembered this Sunday with masses and tributes the first anniversary of the deadly attack against senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, from the Uribist Democratic Center party, who passed away two months later from the injuries sustained.

“Young people, a year ago terrorism played against the future of the nation, the fatal attack against a young person like you. Miguel Uribe Turbay was an example for his affection for Colombia, for his vocation to fight for a free country, with social equity,” stated former President Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010) in a video posted on X.

Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39, grandson of former Colombian president Julio César Turbay Ayala (1978-1982), was wounded by two gunshots to the head during a rally on June 7, 2025 in the Modelia neighborhood of Bogotá and passed away on August 11, after more than two months admitted to a hospital in the Colombian capital.

Miguel Uribe is remembered as “a fighter”

This Sunday, hundreds of people, many of them wearing the yellow jersey of the national soccer team, gathered at El Golfito park, in Modelia, to lay flowers at the site and attend a mass.

Masses were held for Uribe Turbay in different cities in Colombia.

Former President Uribe highlighted that Uribe Turbay, to whom he was not related, focused his work on improving access to education for young people, boosted entrepreneurship, and promoted a policy of trust in the State.

Uribe remembered the murdered senator as “a fighter against this violence” and as a firm opponent of President Gustavo Petro and the leftist senator Iván Cepeda, his candidate to succeed him in office.

“Today we raise the flag of Colombia as a family, remembering Miguel Uribe Turbay. A year ago, the murderous bullets of the mafia, in alliance with dark sectors of politics, silenced his voice in the earthly world, but his ideas and ideals will remain forever,” stated former President Iván Duque (2018-2022) on X.

The senator’s father, Miguel Uribe Londoño, who tried to take up his son’s mantle and was a presidential candidate in last Sunday’s elections, with a poor result, attended another mass with some relatives in the north of Bogotá.

“As a father, I feel great pride in the path he chose and the mark he left on every person at every stage of his life,” expressed Uribe Londoño, who read the prologue of his book, ‘My Cause Colombia’ (2025), dedicated to his son’s memory.

For this murder, nine people have been captured, four of whom have already been convicted, including the teenager who shot him.

The Prosecutor’s Office investigation points to the Segunda Marquetalia, one of the main dissident groups of the former FARC guerrilla, having ordered the crime against Uribe Turbay, whom they consider a staunch opponent in his political career.

However, the politician’s widow, María Claudia Tarazona, said last Friday in an interview with the radio station Blu Radio that the Prosecutor’s Office is investigating whether the murder was a State crime.

“I believe we will know whether or not this was a state crime; it is a theory that the Prosecutor’s Office has and one that we do not rule out,” stated Tarazona.
