Colombian government rejects the attack against Uribe Turbay

Bogotá.- The Colombian government rejected "categorically and emphatically" Saturday's attack against Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, of the Uribista Democratic Center party, which it described as "an attack not only against the senator's personal integrity, but also against democracy and freedom of thought".

In a statement, the Executive reiterated its commitment to the protection of all political leaders and called to "reject any form of political violence" through dialogue and legality.
The politician was attacked by armed individuals who shot him in the back while he was participating in a campaign event around 5:00 pm (local time).

Uribe Turbay, 39 years old, received several gunshot wounds and was taken, seriously injured, to a clinic in the Colombian capital.

"Democracy and peace in Colombia must prevail. We hope that justice is served and the safety of all political leaders and citizens is guaranteed," expressed the Democratic Center, the party founded by former President Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010), after the event.

About Uribe Turbay

Uribe Turbay is a politician close to former President Álvaro Uribe and one of the most severe critics of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, especially for the deterioration of security in the country. Miguel Uribe Turbay is the son of Diana Turbay, a journalist who was kidnapped and murdered in 1991 by drug traffickers in the service of Pablo Escobar, and grandson of former President Julio César Turbay, who governed the country between 1978 and 1982.
