The General Secretariat of Communication of the Presidency of Ecuador reported this Monday that during the night of Sunday, a "humanitarian caravan" led by the president, Daniel Noboa, was the subject of "criminal attacks" in the province of Imbabura, where protests are taking place against him. According to the Government, those attacks on the caravan, which was transporting food, essential goods and fuel for the population affected by the protests in that province in northern Ecuador, were carried out by "violent infiltrated groups".

Noboa himself referred to the event, through his X account, pointing out that it happened in Otavalo. "They responded with violence," he wrote.
The convoy was accompanied by several of Noboa's ministers, as well as the apostolic nuncio, Andrés Carrascosa; the European Union ambassador, Jekaterina Doróodnova; the UN resident coordinator in Ecuador, Laura Melo; and the Italian ambassador, Giovanni Davoli. Regarding this, Doródnova commented that "some blows and stones against the car" were given. "We have seen blockades and tree trunks. We believe that everyone has the right to demonstrate, but peacefully," she stated.

One Dead and Many Lawsuits

Protests against the Noboa Administration, within the framework of a national strike that completes a week this Monday, are taking place in several provinces of Ecuador, although the main focus is concentrated in Imbabura. On Sunday, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie), which leads the demonstrations, denounced the murder of Efraín Fuerez, a 46-year-old Kichwa community member from Cotacachi, in that province. According to the organization, Fuerez was "shot with three shots by the Armed Forces" amid a "repression" for which they blame Noboa. The strike began after Noboa's decision to eliminate the diesel subsidy in Ecuador. Other claims have been added to this, such as the solution to the public health and education crisis, respect for the right to protest and social organization, cessation of mining and extractivist expansion, full guarantees for the life and safety of indigenous peoples and all Ecuadorians, reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 15% to 12%, rejection of the popular consultation that the president seeks to convene a Constituent Assembly, immediate release of those arrested within the framework of the demonstrations and respect for collective rights.
