Trump received the Salvadoran leader last April in the Oval Office of the White House, becoming the first Latin American leader to meet with the Republican in his second term. The visit was marked by the controversial transfer of more than 200 migrants, mostly Venezuelans, to the high-security prison in El Salvador, the Cecot, accused by Washington of belonging to criminal gangs.

Among the people sent to that center was the Salvadoran Kilmar Ábrego García, a migrant who had a court order protecting him from being deported from the United States. US Justice ordered his return to the North American country, which occurred in June, making Ábrego García a symbol against Trump's immigration policy. The National Prayer Breakfast is an annual event founded in 1953 that takes place at the Hilton hotel in Washington on the first Thursday of February. In addition to Bukele, others who participated included U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.
