Heavy rain is expected to return to New York City and the surrounding tri-state area on Tuesday, bringing a high risk of flash flooding beginning around 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Forecasters say periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms could continue through 6 a.m. Wednesday, with isolated rainfall totals of 3 to 4 inches possible in some areas by the end of the event.
“Showers and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are expected Tuesday into Tuesday night. Flash flooding is possible. A Flood Watch is in effect Tuesday for northeastern New Jersey and New York City. Strong thunderstorms are also possible, with the greatest risk across western areas,” the NWS said.
New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) urged residents to prepare for potential flooding.
“New Yorkers should be prepared for periods of heavy rain from Tuesday morning through early Wednesday. If flooding occurs, move to higher ground immediately. If you are in a basement, relocate to a higher floor,” the agency advised.

The latest round of severe weather comes just days after storms caused significant flooding across parts of Manhattan and Queens over the weekend, leaving saturated ground that could worsen flooding with additional rainfall.
